What is a website?

Plain and simple, it's a document, or series of electronic documents (including databases) presented in graphical form designed to convey information. Websites are publically available and can be accessed by anyone from anywhere on the planet with an internet connection. Good websites deliver fast and efficient content which should be available at a moments notice on the slowest of connections.

That being said, a website can be anything from a simple 'postcard' - a page with little more than your name and contact details on it and a brief invitation, a sort of "wish you were here" message - to a massive multi-page virtual journey through the Natural History Museum of London.

That is why knowing what you, the client, wants from a website is so important. I get asked all the time, 'what do you charge for a website?' A difficult question, and in a way it's like walking into a bookshop and saying 'how much are your books?' There are so many variables when it comes to constructing websites, that each one should be unique - there are plenty of rough templates out there that can be used, but that's like buying an old pair of shoes and expecting them to fit your feet perfectly. What you need is something crafted specifically for your own business or personal needs, and that is what i do...

the bottom line is that different needs require different solutions

What is design?

There are two main schools of thought when it comes to design; those who think design should be about whizz-bang graphics and those who think it should be about efficient but stylish delivery of your information across the internet. i fall into the second category. for me design is all about fast and efficient web documents available at a moments notice on the slowest of connections. this is Africa, after all, and when it comes to penetration, we lag far behind most parts of the world in terms of speed and delivery.

What is responsive design?

Having an internet connection is one thing, being able to access a particular website from any one of a variety of devices is a different story altogether...

Responsive design means the ability of your web code to manage all forms of screen media - from the largest widescreen desktop monitor, right down to a moderate smartphone.

Can you judge a book by its cover?

Designing a homepage is as much a science as it is an art form. It requires attention to detail, paying heed to the site's purpose and goals, and taking into account web page performance.

HTML5 is the latest iteration of the web standard and is upheld by most of the major organisations involved in standardising web practices; such as the W3C, WHAT Working Group (WHATWG), Google, Microsoft and many others.

more importantly than any of the above, is tea... tea is very important
